Abstract

The article presents a synthesis of the history of birth control in Puerto Rico since the beginning of the twentieth century to the most recent periods. The discussion highlights the colonial situation of Puerto Rico and its economic and demographic consequences; the North American influence on the eugenic and neomalthusian outlooks in the Island; and the federal government´s fluctuations regarding birth control; as well as the changing status and visions regarding women, motherhood and fertility regulation; the ambivalence and inconsistency of the Puerto Rican government in establishing an integral policy of reproductive health throughout the country; and conditions still constraining reproductive decisions. It refers to pertinent legislation and judicial decisions throughout this history and to the need that the State offer the conditions for a broader reproductive justice and freedom.
